World Class Soldiers
December 26, 2012 | First Sergeant Terrence HynesSo, I did a trend search of military topics and found the following tweet:
Why does every guy coming out of high school think they need to join the military to make something of their life?
For just a moment – let’s assume this was actually a true statement, which it is not… the answer goes something like this:
Believe it or not, many people actually do feel strongly about service to their nation. Some feel so strongly that they would rather do nothing else available to them. I have crossed paths with these great Americans countless times over the 13 years I have now spent in Recruiting Command. Without name-dropping, I have watched the oath of enlistment taken by the children of very rich celebrities, highly educated professionals, and class valedictorians. These people could hardly be described as hopeless, and yet, they find that nothing is nearly as meaningful as serving America in her time of need.
Contrary to the popular misconception of the military as a final option, the ranks are almost completely filled by men and women who had numerous opportunities at their disposal. That is the level of dedication it takes to serve during prolonged conflict on multiple fronts. I wish people knew what I know about the all-volunteer force; that is comprised of people who were and still are willing to give up “making something of their life” in order to make something of our country, our children’s future, and –oh ya – their lives too!
No American feels more fulfilled and more like they “made something of his or her life” that a Soldier and in particular a Soldier who answered the call to serve in armed conflict. I know many of them, and I have assisted a great many of them in the enlistment process. I sure you that they are selfless people who find great pride in their service.
If you have read my past posts, you know that none of my deployments have ever been to a combat zone, despite my best effort over the last 23 years. You also know that I have great respect and admiration for those who have served in combat zones. It is my life’s wish that people would understand just how high-quality our force is and that our Soldiers are world class!
You all have heard people say that our ranks are made up by less fortunate people with no promising future. You also know they are wrong!
What say you to a question like this?
Why does every guy coming out of high school think they need to join the military to make something of their life?
Until the next irritating question gives me inspiration,
Terry
