     As a volunteer I entered the Army in Minneapolis (Home town Willow River MN) in Jan of 57' , went to Ft. Leonard Wood MO for induction and outfitting. Then is was by bus to Ft. Bliss,TX for 10 1/2 weeks of basic ( waited for training command to fill--KP 8 times !!). Assigned to Ft. Chaffee Wheel Mechanics school for "2nd" 8 weeks. After graduating it was another bus trip to Ft. Sill and the 597th AFA and additional training as a track mechanic. About the 1st of June we boarded a train and headed for NY and Brememhaven,Germany via the USS Buckner troop ship. The 7 day voyage in a troop ship with 20-25 guys in a small room stacked 5 high, 4 decks...»
     
  • Marine corps to the army

    They say once a marine always a marine. But you know what I say screw that. I got of the Marine corps in april of 09. Then they wouldn't take me back 3 hrs later. The Army has become my new home from what I have seen and the comradire while I have been in has been as good if not better than the time I spent in the marine corps. All of My buddy's from the marine corps make fun of me cause I am now in the army. I just laugh. I am enjoying my time in the army and am happy with my decision. I recommend the army to everyone that I talk to. Besides you have better gear and equipment in the army anyways. So if you are thinking about joint the army but are split on...»

    I entered the Nevada Army National Guard in 1990 while attending college for the opportunity to become an Army helicopter pilot. Back then, the guard was a reserve force and the majority of the equipment was Vietnam era and was slowly being modernized. One of my draws to the NV Guard was the fact they were still flying the CH-54 Skycrane helicopter, which for any twenty-one year old is an impressive sight.
