Army Story

  • Day Two - HACU Army College Tour @ UT-San Antonio

    November 8, 2011

When the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) decided to make its rounds to numerous schools for their 2011 HACU Army College Tour, I thought what better school to come to then the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Currently serving as the Public Affairs Officer for the UTSA Army ROTC Roadrunner Battalion, me along with other cadets felt the need to share our stories and provide knowledge to other minorities like ourselves on the many ways to get to college… Army ROTC being one of these.

Like many of the high school students who attended the college tour at UTSA today, I also was yearning for ways to get to college growing up. Coming from a low-income household of a single mother who did her best to raise two sons, I grew up knowing I wanted to go to college but knew financially it would be difficult. However over time, scholarships and Army ROTC helped me get there. Now, I am a semester away from getting my Master's Degree in Public Administration and commissioning in the Adjutant Generals' Corps in May.

These are the stories that me and the cadets wanted to share today as not only were they real but showed these students that they too could go to college and strive to be the best, a characteristic the United States Army does well.

It's Day Two of the tour and the students have approached in high numbers asking questions and taking the necessary routes for this career. If all this excitement has happened in only two days, can't wait to report it all come Friday. Perhaps I may even create a video showing this, we'll see.
