Army Story

  • Introducing Myself

    June 11, 2010

Hey. My names Kayla White. I'm 16-years old, and a soon-to-be junior. In November when I turn 17 I'm going to join the Army (Active). I've wanted to join for awhile, and I've viewed all options. My Mom doesn't want me too. She's afraid that I'll be deployed, and something will happen. But thats common fear from mothers right? My Dad doesn't want me to either, but he said he'll give his consent (since he has full custody) if its what I really want to do. My boyfriend of 2 years supports me fully & completely. He's the only one willing to stay with me through all of this, although it took some convincing. :]

To all Soldiers, whether deployed or state side, thank you for everything you have done for this country and our freedom. :D

Kayla, thanks for posting. My mom and dad were afraid when I joined 25 years ago as well - it is natural. What you can do is explain all the advantages you will gain by being a Soldier. For example, my college was paid for and since I've earned two Masters degrees that the Army paid for, as well. I've been to over 25 countries and met some great people. In fact, I met my wife who was also a Soldier. My wife has a great Army story that you may want to pass on. She served 10 years and got out not long after we were married. The Army helped pay for her Masters and PhD and now she is serving Soldiers as the Director of the Behavioral Health Clinic. She will tell you that none of it would have been possible had she not been a Soldier. I am proud of your decision to serve and your parents and boyfirend will be proud, as well.

Jake, I know I can't go into Active Duty until I'm 18. But, after I go through Basic, and then come back to finish my senior year, I'll be 18 before I graduate high school. So, I know what I'm doing. Thanks anyways though.

Hey Kayla, I'm 19 and I am joining the reserves in a month or two. I have a few weeks of school left and then I am going to the recruiting office. I'm just happy to know more girls are going in :) Because us girls have a hard enough time with getting into things guys already do and so therefore, I am so glad that this is what I've decided to do. I can't wait to put on the uniform and learn everything. Have any fears though? I do! :( Just some. But I guess thats normal right? Take care and good luck. Maybe I'll see ya there! -Amanda

Hey Amanda. I have 2 years of high school left! I'm a junior. I have to wait until I'm 17, which sucks, but it's alright. I already talked to a recruiter to ask the questions I had. He said he couldn't really do a full interview until I was 17-years old though, but I understand that. Your right, we do have a hard time getting in to something that guys already do, and have done longer than girls. I've been deciding to join for a long time, since I was little, even though then I didn't know what all the Army could offer. I looked into every branch of military service, but still decided on the Army. My Dad was a Sergeant in the Army, and he loved it, and said he wished he would've done his full amount of time until he could retire. I know that it's going to be a challenge, it's not meant to be easy though ya know? I have fears, but only some. Most of my fears were things that I found out when I asked the recruiter my questions, so there all gone now. It's normal to have fears when your going to do something you've never done and something thats going to challenge you physically and mentally. Good luck!
