  • Kansas National Guard Train the Trainer

    September 28, 2010

SSG Daniel Peters and myself, SSG Scott Grant, traveled to Salina, Kansas to train Kansas National Guard personnel in our Squad Designated Marksman class. Students were trained in Rifle Safety, Fundamentals of Marksmanship, Zeroing and Ballistics, Shooter Target Analysis, Range Estimation, and Wind and Weather. On the range students engaged targets from 100 to 600 meters successfully in strong wind conditions. The winds on most days were on average 18 miles-per-hour. They were even able to make shots out to 800 meters. It was a great experience for SSG Peters and me because the students were highly motivated, very receptive to training, and focused on the task at hand. The unit did a great job in coordinating range and ammunition and made sure we had more than enough assets to accomplish our training goals. The students seemed a little apprehensive at the beginning of the course due to the ranges we were going to shoot at and also the conditions we were going to be shooting in. Wind is a tough element to deal with and the students performed very well despite the strong winds. We could see their confidence building as the days went by. They took what we taught them and applied it and saw that shooting 300 meters is not nearly as hard as they thought. Some students said that before they weren’t too confident in their ability to hit the 300 meter target during qualification, but now having had this course they were more than sure they could take those shots. Many of the students were grateful for the range time, a few said they hadn’t touched a weapon in many months and were appreciative of the time on the range and the instruction we provided. In the end there are 40 more confident marksmen in the Army that can pass on these skills to others in their units.
