Leader Development
May 26, 2010
In the Army we talk a lot about leader development, yet we spend precious few hours dedicated to doing it. It reminds me of the countless speeches from leaders who talk about "taking care of Soldiers" when they were really interested in taking care of themselves. Team, leader development is done through education, self development, and time spent in the operational domain of our Army. Invest the time in your Soldiers professional development by talking with them and sharing life experiences. You can do this at our Army institutions, on a COP or FOB, or on a BLOG. This is what makes our Army great. Passing along our experiences from combat and events that shaped our Army careers. I spoke with a group of students the other day at Fort Sill. I didn't use PowerPoint or present a fancy briefing on how I had the answers to solve world hunger. I had a conversation with a group of combat experienced young leaders who have more time in combat than I do. I learned as much from them as they did from me. I was amazed to find the emails in my inbox once I returned to theater thanking me for talking with them. Let's spend as much time developing our future leaders as we do working on PowerPoint slides these days. It's time to invest in what we love about our Army - OUR SOLDIERS!
