  • Leader's Training Course - An experience like none other

    September 17, 2010

I was entering my fourth year of college not really having any idea of what I wanted to do.  I was aware that I was getting older and that my chances of getting enrolled into ROTC were slipping away.  After talking to the ROTC recruiter at my school, he mentioned to me a program called LTC or Leader's Training Course.  It is a program designed for cadets who missed out on their first two years of military science and would like to get into ROTC without having to spend another 4 years in school.  After graduating LTC, you are now in a leadership position at your school as an MS III.

At first, I had no idea what LTC was going to bring me.  I knew it was going to be a great experience, but you always have the jitters when you enter a new environment.  For the 28 days that I stayed in Fort Knox, KY, I can't recount anytime that I didn't want to be there.  Yes, it did get difficult at times, but I was not going to quit.  To be honest, I had a blast at LTC.  Some of things we did included the Zodiak boat, stream crossing, and the high ropes course (which is terrifying).

Overall, the experience at LTC was something I wouldn't take back.  I got to hone in on my leadership skills and find out where I stand among the rest.  You find out what your strenghts are, but you also find what you need to improve on.

Would I recommend LTC? Yes!  It taught me skills that I'm going to keep the rest of my life.  It wasn't just a great experience, it was fun!  Don't ever feel like it's too late to do ROTC.
