My life in the Army as an Infantryman
June 9, 2010
Well I thought it would be a lot different than what I was expecting. In some aspects it's better than I thought and worse in some areas. I enlisted in '08 and got to Fort Campbell, KY the day I graduated as a brand new cherry Infantryman. I must say that I thought of myself a stronger person when i became an Infantryman. Little did I know that this job requires a lot of time and effort to get where I am today. I've seen people not 2 days old in their new unit and gone AWOL. This job is for a very special breed of person who is willing and flexible. Since I have been at Fort Campbell I have struggled a lot with money due to being a Private...those days are well and gone. We have just gotten out of a 11 month training frenzy and the training we received, though grueling and painful, was well worth it. They don't teach you this kind of stuff in basic for a reason. It takes some time to understand the full picture of every minor detail of the battlefield. I went through these training events as an Assitant Gunner on the 240. It is by far my favorite job and being in weapons squad is a privilege. I have since been moved to the "wonderful" position of RTO. I was reccomended by many people for this position due to my attention to detail and overall care for my job. I am deploying to Afghanistan in august and will be there for a year. I am completely confident in my ability's to kick the enemies asses. I am in WPNS Squad, 1st PLT, Easy Co., 2-506th INF, 4th BCT, 101st ABN DIV (AASLT). It's the best platoon in 2nd Battalion by far...now I'm bragging a little bit. My word of advice to all the prospective soldiers and to new soldiers is have situationl awareness, pay attention to detail, and as a Private your job is too easy...be where you are told to be, when you are told to be there and in the right uniform. Be sure to pay the proper respect that prior deployed soldiers deserve they are the one to get good information from to help you grow up in the Army and possibly help save someones life overseas. Your time in the Army will not be peachy if you are an Infantryman, but whatever MOS you choose, if your gonna do your time and get out don't cause the Army problems use your time to do good things and better your unit and peers.
