My ROTC Experiences
October 3, 2010
As a fourth year ROTC Cadet, I have been given wonderful opportunities to travel, meet new people, and experience life changing training. During the Summer of 2009, I was given the opportunity to attend Cadet Field Training, training that West Point cadets complete after their Freshman year. Not many ROTC Cadets got to attend, but for those of us that did, it was an amazing experience. We participated in Land Nav, STX Lanes, Patrolling, Confidence Courses, took a week long trip to Ft. Knox to get a look into Armor, and did many other things. Working along with USMA Cadets for 28 days gave me a look into a commissioning source other than ROTC. When I commission in June, I will be working with all sorts of people and it was very beneficial to get to work with and become friends with other types of people.
This past Summer I attended LDAC and Airborne School. Both of these were also amazing experiences. At LDAC, I spent 28 days working with Cadets from all over the country at Fort Lewis. While we were being evaluated on our leadship skills, it was more about learning and working with each other. The best part of attending LDAC was meeting people from all over the country and working to better each other as leaders. At LDAC, the Cadre are there to support you and they do a great job of providing Cadets with great mentors and people to look up.
Following LDAC, I went to Airborne School at Fort Benning. For three weeks, I worked along side hundreds of service members (Cadets, Enlisted, Officers, Navy, Marine Corps). It was an amazing experience and the first time I had worked along side all types of service members. At Airborne School, I pushed myself to mental limits at times (I am not a fan of heat), but it was worth it in the end. I made some of the best friends at Fort Benning as we all struggled through rough days and fun weekends.
In two Summers, I have had some of the most amazing experiences I could imagine and I owe that to my involvement in the Army ROTC program. I know that these Summer experiences have helped develop me as a better leader, co-worker, and friend. I am glad I was given these opportunities and will continue to grow from them.
