Army Story

  • Never Quit Striviing for Your Education

    September 2, 2010

I need to explain where I come from. I am the only one in my family to ever finish College. I am also the only one in my family to earn Masters Degrees and a Ph.D. I started working as a bus boy in a restaurant at 15 to help my family make ends meet. I have been working ever since.  My military service over the last 35 years has changed my life.  Without the Army my life would have been very different.  I could not really afford to attend College when I got out of High School.  Working multiple jobs and living on meager amounts of food I was able to get through one semester of College.  The military was second semester and it was the best thing that ever happened.  I was able to serve and learn.  Over the years my philosophy of education has changed it has become a philosphy of life long learning.  The hardest step is the first one.  Never quit is an Army value.  The military provides so much help it amazes me that so few take advantages of getting a great education.  Every step that a Soldier takes in getting his or her education is a step towards a better life.  The opportunities to learn and grow have never been better for a Soldier.  I have never stopped learning and as I reflect back on my life.  I know if it wasn't for the Army I could still be the dishwasher that I started out as.  NEVER EVER QUIT!
