The University of Toledo ROTC Fall FTX
October 9, 2011
The weekend of September 29, 2011 - October 2, 2011 marked this years University of Toledo Fall FTX. Due to class conflicts I did not arrive to Camp Perry until around 5:00 PM EST on Friday. The most noticible thing I missed was the Leaders Reaction Course (LRC) that took play Friday morning.
PHASE 1: Upon my arrival I was immediately set up with my gear and given an MRE for the evening. From there I set foot to partake in the Land Navigation course. I set my pace then began with my first strip of Day Land Nav. The sun went down and we transitioned into Night Land Nav. It began to rain so we were instructed to do the first three points on our strip in less than one hour. Overall, I did very well and I sharpened my Land Navigation skills. We proceeded to the barracks were minor tasks were conducted then called it a night.
PHASE 2: Saturday was the most interesting day in my opinion. The weather wasn't the greatest (until later in the evening), but that didn't stop us from having a great time. We woke up early and split off into our prospective groups. The MSIIIs did STX Lanes, while the MSIIs/Is split into two groups. My group went to the Engagement Skills Trainer (EST) first. I personally learned a lot from this experience. It was my first time and I look forward to doing it again. From there, the groups switched and we went to the shoot house. This was my favorite part of the day. A group of MSIVs demonstrated to us how to properly clear a room. We then conducted several practice runs until we were ready to actually clear the rooms. We geared up with paintball guns and took our knowledge to the next level by facing off against fellow cadets and some MSIVs. We then cleaned up, stepped off to chow, then ended the night by watching the movie 'Platoon'.
PHASE 3: Sunday was a short day. We hit the ground running by starting the day off with the notorious "Rocket Challenge". This consists of a 5K ruck march (5 laps), with four stations per lap. This year we did 40 push ups, 40 sit ups, 25 ruck lifts, and 25 four count flutter kick like exercise (not sure of actual name). Overall, this was a time and a great workout. After that was all said and done we proceeded to chow, got our gear from the barracks and headed home. We cleaned the supplies then wrapped up what was one of the greatest FTXs I've been apart of thus far.
Overall, I feel like this years FTX ran very smoothly and consisted of several events that resulted in different learning experiences. I am glad I took part and I can't wait for the Spring FTX.
