University of Toledo Army ROTC FTX
September 22, 2010
I never thought I'd be the type to join the military when I came here to the university of Toledo, but the recruitment people at my orientation day told me that it would be fun, I'd make friends, and it would also be an easy A for my gpa. I decided to try it out for a semester or two and see what it was like. Now that I'm actually enrolled in the program, I've found that it is a blast and you really do make alot of close friends. This weekend of September 19th our class had an optional FTX (Field training exercise) trip from friday to sunday. I knew we were going to be doing alot of stuff but I never imagined that I would learn so much while having so much fun. We started the weekend by getting all of our gear in order and conducting a land nav class. It was all outdoors so it's not a typical classroom setting where your fallng asleep trying to pay attention. We learned how to measure the distance youve walked and how to read a compass and we practiced getting from point a to point b in day and night conditions. The next day was a complete blast, we went to what's called an EST where we got to fire real weapons with air blast bullets instead of actual projectiles. It was basically like a huge Wii that used real weapons. We also got to play paintball, and learned strategies of how the army clears rooms while raiding houses. Everybody got to shoot their buddies and run around in paintball gear. Then the rocket challenge was a real physical push so each cadet could see where they were mentally and physically. The entire weekend was a blast. If you even are having minor thoughts about enrolling in Army ROTC I definitely suggest it, as long as you don't hate fun.
