Army Story

  • University of Toledo Army ROTC LDAC experience

    August 26, 2011

I have spent the last three years at the University of Toledo in the Army ROTC program preparing to be an Army officer. Prior to 4JULY2011 I also began my training for what is called Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC), a course that has a huge impact on our overall assessment as a cadet. Before arriving at Joint Base Lewis McChord, I had no idea what to expect. All I knew were the stories from cadets who have gone to LDAC in years past. Upon arrival I was instantly put into a platoon of 45 cadets who I had never seen before. This was very exciting to me because I had not had the experience of being integrated with cadets from all over the United State, Great Britian, and Puerto Rico. I wanted to know how other ROTC programs around the nation were training their cadets, and I wanted to be able to compare myself to others. During LDAC I was assessed in many ways. From my skill as a platoon sergeant and squad leader in a garrison environment, my ability to navigate through the woods using a compass and a map, my knowledge of first aid, my physical fitness,to how well I could lead a squad and a platoon in the field. I was not only assessed, but it was a huge learning experience, and my knowledge was enhanced in many aspects. I became more familiar with US weapon systems such as the AT4, M-203, M-240, and M-249. I had my first exposure to CS gas, and learned how to react in a chemical environment. I participated in a water confidence course consisting of a 50 ft. tall zip line, a zodiak race, and a rope drop. Overall my experience was one to remember. It was very organized and all the trainers were helpful and knowledgeable. I am proud of how well I did at LDAC and the training I received the University of Toledo overly prepared me for success.
