Airborne!
March 23, 2010
Finished airborne school. Learning to jump out a plane deep in enemy territory and cause lots of mischief in the enemy's rear is pretty freaking cool, even if it's unlikely we will do it again. We stood around a lot and did some pretty stupid stuff but I had a great time in the end.
Jumping was of course the coolest thing. I was the chalk leader for the first chalk to jump the new T-11 parachute. I also got to jump first one time which was awesome. When you get the equipment check passed up to your you stick your hand in the jump masters face and yell as load and motivated as you can "All OK Jumpmaster!!!." Next he puts you in the door and you're ready to jump. It was cold that day so my knees were shaking as the wind was going by outside at 150 mph. You look out the door and see the ground going by and you wonder "Wait a second, people can jump out planes? I'm supposed to go out there? This doesn't make any sense." I've seen it in movies and from the outside, but the possibility still amazed me. Then the jumpmaster tells you to go and you jump right now. You hurtle through the air for a few seconds and then all the sudden all goes quiet and you look up and fortunately see a parachute above your head. Landing is a hard hit but as long as you have your body aligned right and keep your feet and knees together you are fine. It was pretty awesome.
Here is a picture of one of the training aids, the 34 foot tower to practice exits.
