The Army's Magnificent Maude Complex, my $211 Million Office

July 14, 2010

A short note today.  I just wanted to post a photo of my new office...well, the new office complex where I work each day.

Did I mention that I have a way-cool $211 million office?  Throw in another 14, 000,000 dollars for furniture and now I have a 225 million dollar office....which I share with 4,399 other Army employees.

This is the Lieutenant General (3-star) Timothy Maude Complex, just completed and opened in mid-June 2010, a month ago.  It is purported to be second-only to the Pentagon in floor space for any US Military building, and at just under 900,000 square feet and housing 4,400 employees, it is a big office.

This photo of the main entrance does not really do the building justice, as you can only see the Accessions Command section of the complex, in the background behind the entrance marker, which is only a tiny portion of the Maude Complex.

So, take a look at this shot from the air and see if you would agree, that this is one large building the Army has just constructed to house Human Resources Command and Army Accessions Command.  Remember that on a rainy day the Army employees in uniform cannot use an umbrella (against regulation since we are all warriors first and office minions second), so if the rain is really hammering down, and you have a seven minute walk in from the far reaches of the parking lot, you will most certainly remain soaked in your office cubby hole for the duration of the day.  That is the part we all love about the 5,000-car parking lot.   Kind of looks like you could land a 747 jet airliner out there if you moved a few cars to the side, doesn't it?

This building you are looking at here is the largest office building in the Commonwealth of Kentucky ("commonwealth" is Kentucky's unusual way of saying that they are a "state" like the other 46 states not called commonwealths, just that they somehow have all their state's "wealth-in-common", and have a funny title just like Virginia, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts), so the Governor came to join the generals, to speak and cut the ribbons and get us all moved in and to work.

If you were not familiar with Lt. Gen. Timothy Maude, to whom this building is memorialized, here is his short bio and photo:

Lieutenant General Timothy J. Maude (November 18, 1947 – September 11, 2001), was the highest ranking military officer killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks.  He held the position of U.S. Army's Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, and was in his Pentagon office area when the hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the west side of The Pentagon, directly into his office area, killing him and many of his staff.

Born in Indianapolis, Indiana LTG Maude enlisted into the Army on March 21, 1966 and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant upon completing Officer Candidate School in February 1967. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in management from Golden Gate University and a Master of Arts Degree in Public Administration from Ball State University. Upon being commissioned he served one year in Vietnam and the rest of his career in the United States, West Germany and Korea. His assignments include Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel and Installation Management Seventh United States Army (a.k.a. United States Army Europe and Seventh Army or USAREUR) and Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel United States Army.

That's it for today's blog.  Come visit, but don't forget your ID card!   No Identification, No access.

You simply must come see our secret swimming pool, bowling alley and movie theater in the basement...wait a minute, that is part of a different complex.  My bad.
