BUSINESS AND THE ARMY

August 18, 2011

The business world and the military have similarities and differences. One of the things that was most noticeable, even though I expected it, was the lack of uniforms with rank, awards, and achievements. In no way did I think that this civilian corporation would have their employees wear uniforms, but I have grown accustomed to the uniforms of the military, and their absence was very noticeable. The uniform with everything worn on it is almost like a miniature résumé. With one glance, I can tell what position (or at least how much authority) a person holds, what trainings and schools they attended, the places they have been deployed, and much more. But the uniform and everything on it does not define the person. So in this business setting, I didn’t know about a person until I actually got to know the person. In doing so, I was able to learn so much more about their experience, the skills they could share, and I could learn a lot from them. Compared to those I was working with, my business “uniform” would have been very empty, but I still had a lot to offer. The “mini résumé” of the uniform is nice to have and can give an idea about the person, but I realized that this one glance is nowhere near enough to tell me all about a person and what he has to offer. When I am a PL, I want to get to know my soldiers and learn about their strengths and weaknesses and how we can best work together as a team instead of looking at a piece of paper that the Army says defines this person to make my judgments.
