CLOSE THE GAP
August 18, 2011
Close the Gap is an initiative started by Boston Scientific in order to reach all Americans with information about cardiovascular disease and how to prevent it, connect them with care, and ultimately lower the prevalence of CVD in America. The project I worked on, along with a cadet from the Air Force Academy – Justin Franklin – dealt with using social media to reach the target populations. The project involved a lot of research and analysis to determine the ideal social networking sites and how to use them effectively. I learned much about social media from this project, but I also had a bigger realization. BSC’s Close the Gap initiative, if it is 100% successful, would eliminate CVD in America, which would essentially make Boston Scientific obsolete. However, those who started CTG realized that saving lives is more important than making a profit. In my opinion, Boston Scientific is doing the right thing, even if they lose money. This fact made me think about my career as a cadet and an Army officer. Some decisions, some missions, some plans may be difficult and may not help me. But the Army is not about the individual soldier; it’s about the team, and it’s about serving and protecting the national interests of the United States of America. If Boston Scientific is willing to sacrifice potential profits to possibly save lives, why shouldn’t I be willing to give of myself to serve others? That is exactly what the fine men and women of the Army do every day.
