Update Cont. #1

March 28, 2010

Okay World I owe you a continuation of the update that I last posted. After spending about 6 weeks in Charlotte , NC with my MOM I was glad to be making the 16 hour drive to Fort Leavenworth because she was really starting to get on my nerves, not to mention constantly seeing people from my childhood that have not done anything with their lives. I know that there is a recession and all but being unemployed is not an option in this economy.

So in the second week of August I checked into my new unit HHC 40th MP BN close to 4 months pregnant. When I checked into my duty station I had yet to receive permission to move off post and unfortunately there was no housing post available which is hard to believe. Unfortunately privatized housing here at Fort Leavenworth would prefer to take the BAH of that of an field grade officer who can afford to live off post with his or her family, as opposed to the BAH of a (at the time) SPC(P) who received half the pay and half the BAH, not to mention a single parent. Most of the Soldiers that live in post housing are in ILE and are only at Fort Leavenworth for 10 months. You would think that they would not get first dibs on housing with this being my permanent duty station and all.

So I checked into my unit and stayed in the BEQ until I could get my housing situation under control. I do have to say that the BEQ here at Fort Leavenworth has to be the best BEQ I have ever set foot in. It might have something to do with housing running the BEQ as opposed to the unit having responsibility for maintaining it. The doors in the barracks had key cards, and there was a media room in the lobby with reclining chairs and surround sound. There were actually enough working washers and dryers for me to wash my clothes without having to wait for a washer or dryer to be opened.
The BEQ manager, which was a civilian, was nice enough to let me stay in a temp room until I could find housing. For some reason here at Fort Leavenworth you cannot start your BAH until you have cleared the barracks and in my case my statement of non-availability from housing. So I lived in the barracks until I found a place off post.

In my housing search I discovered that I do not make a whole lot of money, yet I make too much money to stay in some of the nicer housing in the Leavenworth area, even when it is income based. Even when pricing day care at the CDC why is it that income is based on gross. Someone please explain to my income is evaluated on the gross amount of money that I make per month as oppose to what I actually take home. Well world, don’t want to overwhelm you all at one time so I am going to owe you another continuation. At this rate I might have you up to speed by the time my maternity leave is over with. Until next time, STAY BLESSED.
