So, What Should We Talk About Now?
July 8, 2010
My new role as part of the Trial Defense Service (TDS) is a little bit different from every other legal job in the Army. TDS attorneys work for Soldiers and officer accused of crimes just like any civilian attorney would. We are there to represent the Soldier, not the commander, not the Army. In the Army, the opportunity to form attorney-client relationships is rare, and even more rare is a chance to be an advocate for someone when so much can be at stake for your client. Soldiers might be facing loss of rank, forfeitures of pay, confinement in jail, or dismissal from the service. They can lose their jobs and their freedom all at once.
But that relationship also means that what we talk about is kept confidential. I won't be writing about my cases. I do intend to keep writing about leadership -- hopefully more leadership in practice than leadership in theory! And I'll write about interesting legal issues that might arise in some of the cases in the office (again, talking only about issues, not the facts of any of our cases). And for the next couple weeks perhaps, the Tour de France.
So, what else do you want to talk about?
