2011 Gettysburg Staff ride
September 19, 2011
The University of Toledo Army ROTC Rocket Battalion took its MSIV class of cadets on a staff ride to Gettysburg, PA to gain a better understanding of not only each other, but the battle that ensued at Gettysburg. The trip occurred on the 9/11 ten year anniversary weekend. During our trip to Gettysburg we stayed in the PA National Guard, Carlisle Barracks. The First day started off with the discussion and walking of the battlefield on day one of the campaign. We discussed the events and decisions made by the commanding generals along with the feeling of the troops executing these orders. After each segment of the battle field tour we were allotted time to walk around and tour the monuments of the regiments and corps that took part in the battle. This allowed for reflection and analysis of our own opinions on the actions of the battle. Eventually, we made it up to the second day in the battle and were able to walk up little round top and see the vantage point the Union defenses had over the attacking confederate troops. After Little Round Top, we were able to explore Devils Den and understand the importance that the Union Artillery was to their defensive lines. The last part of the First day included a trip to the Gettysburg Museum; here we were able to see some of the weapons and clothing along with visual break downs of how the battle unfolded for both Armies. That night the MSIV class got to explore The Historic Downtown Gettysburg for some much needed bonding time. On the third day of our trip to Gettysburg we marched from seminary ridge to Cemetery Hill and completed Pickets Charge as if we were the soldiers. We formed up in rank and file as the Armies did during the Civil War, we then marched in rank up Cemetery Hill visualizing what a daunting task it must have been for those confederate soldiers to complete with heavy Artillery from Little Round Top and direct fire from Infantry Units dispersed all across the Hill. As the Day ended we concluded our trip with a visit to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA. The Memorial had just been reconstructed and was not completely finished but was all encompassing of those great American Citizens that paid the ultimate sacrifice for so many Americans. Our trip was Educational and historical but above all it was a great experience that all of us will remember for a long time to come.
