JAG Birthday Week

July 31, 2010

This last week at FLW was a little more exciting in terms of client numbers and experiences.  Two of our four attorneys were out on Monday and Tuesday because of the commanders cup gof tournament so my co-worker and I split the clients which was A LOT more fun.  Having one after the other in clients makes the day fly by.  Another thing that happened on Monday was when I got to work our new SJA (Staff Judge Advocate) asked to see me and let me know that I was going to give a speech over the history of the JAG corps on Friday for the 235 anniversary of the oldest and most distinguished law firm in the nation!

I also had my first conlfict of interest this week when a wife came in seeking advice for a divorce and a few hours later the husband followed but had to be screened and see another attorney.  Funny how fast things can happen even on an installation with as many people as FLW.

Later this week we played a double header in softball against the NAVY and then the undefeated Fire Dept and we are proud to say we won both games by more than 7 runs with our defense starting out both games with 2 shut out innings.  Adding in that the SJA heard about the games and how we didnt get finished til around 10 so he gave us a day off of PT, it was AWESOME.

For PT this week we did engineer trail (about a 3 mile trail run with workout stations along the way) and then on Wed we got to play ultimate frisbee.  I also torched my body on tues with a 2 on 2 game of hooverball.  Its where you fill a volleyball with about 8 lbs of sand and get on a sand volleyball court and have to catch and throw the ball back and forth to different areas on the court without running or moving your feet.  After 4 games it starts getting more difficult and then one of your interns brought out a new creation of a 12 lb ball.  This was the epitomy of rediculous.  Only he and I could manage to get the ball over the net from the serve line at the back of the court, and even when it went over, I was the only one to catch one (which I took in the stomach, chest, and arms and it knocked me straight to the ground.

On Friday we had our workday which was great because I had planned on refining my small speech when I got the news that I was also supposed to (but not required) to have a powerpoint presentation.  So, 3 hours til speech and I started making the presentation to go with it.  I got it done with an hour to spare and even though the speech was a little dry in material and only about 4 minutes, the powerpoint and pictures livened it up (With picture of George Washington yelling Hooah JAG and Zachary Taylor holding a light saber to kill darth vader).  Last but not least, we got let out 59 minutes early on Friday!  This place has been tons of fun so far and it keeps getting better

Make sure to hit up the Elbow Inn soon. Ask your paralegal where it is. Also, make sure to tell her "Grant's Daddy" says hi as well. (seriously)

Thanks for doing this blog. It's great to hear about what day-to-day life is like for JA.

Just curious, as I am considering the JAG corps as well. You say on Friday you "got let out [early]"...are there set hours you work, or do you have to wait for the commander to let you go each day? How does the day-to-day schedule work?

The hours really depend on your installation. If you are at more of a training installation (as I am) then most of us work a 9-5 or 8-5 schedule and dont have to do much more after it.

If you are working with a unit that is about to deploy or are deploying yourself, your hours could be much different and it really depends on the amount of work you have to do
