I'm a dad!

November 23, 2010

Agh, It's been a while since I've written, but, in my defense, I've been on leave for the last four weeks.  My wife and I welcomed our first child in late October, and my entire life has been turned upside down...in a good way!  I am humbled and thrilled (and a little bit scared) to be a dad, but I can't wait for the adventures and the experiences that await me and my wife.

Not to propagandize the issue, but the Army is a great support to parents.  Even though I'm deployed to Africa (I just got back a couple of days ago), the Army made it possible for me to be home for the birth of our child.  Our unit's Family Readiness Group made sure my wife was doing well.  In all, I didn't have to stress too much about anything except taking care of my wife and ensuring our little one was healthy.

So, now I'm back in Africa, and being a dad has motivated me to kick things up a notch so my deployment is a positive experience.

Welcome to the club brotha! I have been married for seven years and I have two girls, all of which have been born while I was deployed. Trust me on this, it only makes you more mature than you are right now, and it is not all about you anymore, it is about them. I feel you, I wake up in the morning knowing that I am doing it for them as well. Congrats!

Not to completely down play your " Deployment " but if you had been in Iraq or Afghanistan on a true deployment you wouldn't have been so lucky as to have been there. So to all the soldiers out there who do real deployments I'm sorry you missed any of your children's births so that we can have people on hardship tours that don't hold a candle to what a lot of us do. Being in the national guard may have helped you on that also because in active duty if your child isn't being born during there leave schedule too bad it'll be there when you get back.

Thanks for not completely playing down my "deployment".

I'll remember that being thousands of miles away from home doesn't really count, since I'm not in Iraq or Afghanistan. I'll also remember that since I'm not active duty, since I'm not an MP or in the infantry, hey, I'm not a real soldier either.

      Stay classy, Jake!

I agree with Brent. I am active duty, both children born while I was deployed, however, my chain of command made it possible for me to be home for my second baby. I am not bitter because I did not get to see my first one born. And regardless whether you are Reserves, National Guard or Active duty, we all have a mission to accomplish! Army Strong!
