Visiting the task force smith battle sight
July 10, 2011
Upon reaching the sight i saw this big statue that had flags from each of the coalition nations that fought with the south during the Korean War. It commemorated a battle that turned into one of the Army's most embarasing moments. The battalion sized force was sent from occupation duty in Japan strait to the front lines, their objective was to hold a blocking position along the Seoul to Pusan road in order to slow the NK army's advance. They were lightly armed and had not been properly training at the time since they where just intended as an occupation force. Long story short they were steam rollered by the norths advance and sustained heavy casualties. I got the chance to walk up the hill overlooking the road so I could get a better look at the fighting positions. Every few meters there seemed to be either a trench or a fox hole dug into the ground. There were even some small concrete fighting positions there. It makes you wonder what would have happened if they were more prepared and heavily armed. In the end the battle taught the Army to never stop preparing for battle, especially during a time of peace.
