Doc!
July 29, 2010
During my 16-plus years of service, virtually every Army medic with whom I have worked has been affectionately called "Doc." Once a medic earns that nickname, he or she has truly been accepted by Soldiers as someone they trust with their lives. However, one "Doc" here in the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood trumps them all.
Staff Sergeant Zackary Filip, a medic currently assigned to 1st Cavalry Division, recently received the honor of the Army Times Soldier of the Year. SSG Filip has saved lives on the battlefield in Afghanistan. He also saved lives at the Soldiers Readiness Center on November 5, 2009 during the Fort Hood shootings. He has an amazing story for a young man initially without much direction in his life until he joined the Army.
I had the good fortune of interacting with SSG Filip during the media interviews that followed his award. Perhaps even more impressive than his previous actions is SSG Filip's genuine humililty and continued dedication to the Nation. We see him as an amazing hero; he sees himself as a Soldier simply doing his job. These are the type of people we have in the Army and I'm proud to call SSG Filip, "Doc."
