How to become an officer

July 13, 2010

There are a few ways to become an Army officer and they are all centered around your education.  A bachelors or four year degree is key to getting commissioned as an Amry officer.  It's not neccessary to already have your degree but to complte it before getting commissioned.  The path that everyone thinks of is getting an appointment to West Point and this has definately been around the longest.  There is also ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) and OCS (Officer Candidate School).

ROTC is a program at selected universities all over the United States in which cadets complete a training program focusing on leadership, physical fitness, and Army doctrine.  Cadets attend military science classes, in addition to their regular classes, and once they complete their degree and ROTC program become commissioned and earn the rank of Second Lieutenant.  There is also a program offerd by the U.S. Army Reserve to allow students to serve in the reserve and receive money to pay for their college.

OCS is a program for those with their bachelors degree.  They complete a packet, appear before an officer board and attend basic training/OCS before getting their commission.  This is usually the fastest route to become and officer without any militray experience or background.

U.S Army recruiters can assist anyone in getting in contact with the ROTC department and completing the OCS packet/training dates.
