Better Blogging Through Chemistry

March 30, 2010

After finding Army Strong Stories, I went right to the Chemical Corps group to find...... nothing. Well I'm here to change that. I've spent the bulk of my working life in the Army (22 years and counting) and all of those years in the Chemical Corps. My blog will focus on what I do as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Chemical Corps as well as stories about my past misadventures. I've always loved photography and I have thousands of negatives of the past 22 years, so I'll try to include as many as I can because a picture is worth a thousand words...in fact probably two thousand of my words since I try and use small ones.

My current job is with the Army Evaluation Center and is one of the coolest jobs I've had so far. My lofty title is Senior Military Evaluator. I work with a bunch of very talented engineers, scientists, and administrators (collectively known as the "throbbing Craniums") that test the equipment that the Army is interested in buying. This is the kind of work I dreamed I would be doing when I chose the Chemical Corps!

Many times in my career, I had to deal with a crappy piece of equipment. I would yell, " Who designed this piece of crap!" Usually muffled through a protective mask. Those of you who ever had to scrub a tank with the gooey mass that use to be the M13 DAP brush head will know what I mean [what DS-2 and plastic don’t play well together!]. Well, now I know who tests and evaluates equipment for effectiveness, suitability and survivability....it’s us!

Much like laws and sausage, the procurement cycle is not as pretty as they teach you in the Defense Acquisition University. We make a lot of sausage in the Testing and Evaluation world. And where would we be without nice flavorful sausage! Couldn't find a good sausage image, so I picked something equally crazy from my vast collection of recipe cards from the 1970's.

Yum, they don't make them like that any more.  Anyway, watch this space if you are interested in the Army, the Chemical Corps, photography, antique electronics, linoleum block printing or sausage.

Die hard!
