Cleveland Air to Big D Ground
September 13, 2010
Well, my time in Cleveland has come to an end. I think the air show was successful from all angles, and Drill Sergeant Semsick and I spoke with quite a few young people and their parents. I think I even convinced a couple of prospective Soldiers of the merits of being an Infantryman as opposed to the jobs that they were considering. My work here is done. The Army was definitely out in full force at the show with numerous activities in the area to include a rock climbing wall, AH-64 simulator, race car exhibit, and the pushup competition run by DS Semsick and myself. We ran two competitions per day and, I must say, those ended up being the biggest hit. Why pretend to fly rotary wing attack aviation when you can have a real Drill Sergeant make you do pushups? That's a no brainer in my book. We had numerous participants, from 2 year olds to a 70 year old woman who, by the way, did twenty five correct pushups. I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to fly with the Golden Knights Army Parachute Team. Although I couldn't convince them to strap me in for a tandem jump, the flight was the coolest flight I've ever been on; literally and figuratively. The only thing keeping me warm in the 20 degree cabin was my excitement. Cleveland was truly a great time and I think we were very successful in spreading a good message and giving some young people some insight on what the army is really like.
