Dallas NHRA prep

September 22, 2010

It's been a big week leading up to this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday's NHRA races in Ennis, TX.  I had the priveledge of visiting Axtell High School in Axtell, TX and BISD Carreer and Tech School in North Richland Hills, TX.  I attended these schools with Nicolas Gaines, a team member on Tony Schumacher's team.  Tony is the driver for the Army sponsored NHRA car, and has 7 championships under his belt.

Axtell was a fun experience for me, due to the fact that I had been to the school on many occaisions in High School for football games and track meets.  Out of the six years I played football, my team played Axtell four times.  Some of the current coaches at the school had been on Axtell's football team years ago and I had played against them.  The school was incredibly receptive, and it was fun to foster up some old rivalries.  The superintendant of the school allowed me 45 minutes in a classroom with many of the Junior and Senior classes to have a question and answer session on my Army story, and on day to day Army life.

BISD technical school was a great time yesterday.  We pulled the car into the auto tech class, in the shop.  The young men and women there loved it, and it was very pertinent to what they do there on a day to day basis.  The car is amazing, going from zero to 320 miles an hour in only a little over 4 seconds, and 1000 feet of distance.  I dont care who you are, an 8,000 horsepower car is an impressive piece of machinery.

Two more school visits to go, and then it's off to the races!  I'll be at the Army booth, and then in the pits with Schumacher's team this weekend for all three days of the race.  If you're interested, come by and we can talk Army, or just talk about how awesome the car and the crew are.
