First Stop, LTG Freakley and Dr. Christopher King

October 26, 2010

Arrived at Lewis and Clark center.

Now in Marshall Hall. Waiting anxiously to see the welcome from LTG Caslen (the Commanding General of the Combined Arms Center and Ft Leavenworth and the Commandant of the Command and General Staff College).

LTG Freakley and Officer Side of the Army

Commander, ACCESSIONS Command  The Army Model - education, training, experience; technology, simulations, and actual hands on experience all result in a Soldier and Leader we can count on.

When an organization is diverse and inclusive production is increased by 40%. The Army is diverse and inclusive. Officer side of the Army is looking for help to increase diversity.

Professional military education and training

Officer and enlisted pathways follow the army training model throughout careers - education, training, experience combined with civilian education opportunities. NCO's are the backbone of the Army.

Army training more intensive for everything from EMT training to truck driving training. Army training programs require success in a simulator before actually practicing/driving.

Dr. Christopher King

An engineer and retired Brigadier General, dean of academics, Commandand General Staff College.  Tony Wagner's book - Global Achievement Gap. Says standardized Tests may not be getting us where we want to be. CGSC Outcomes closely align with Wagner's seven survival skills for the world today. General Dempsey, TRADOC Commander requires all senior leaders to read Wagner's book.

Faculty is 70% civilian but many with at least 20 years of experience. Many former battalion and brigade commanders but also some civilians without military experience who are experts in their fields. 7800 students. Army provides a resident course for all midllevel officers. Also providing quality online education programs. Top 10 % of CGSC graduates are eligible for the SAMS course.

Adult learning outcomes base education

Nobody is as smart as everybody. Army education is a professional outcomes based program. Experiential programs with kind, gentle evaluation. Learned from Harvard university to learn their case study model. Reach back, pull ahead. Are the guide on the side not the stage on the stage. Technology is part of the solution. Students analyze data differently - are studying and experimenting with different teaching methodologies - small groups studying complex issues. Experimenting with iPads, etc. Have lifelong and times learning outcomes. Develop experts - are the best in the world. Officers have to apply that expert knowledge. Always developing critical and creative thinking. Stuffing more in the box does not do it. Need depth to develop skills and ability to think strategically.

Depth

Though much we want to teach have to make very hard decisions to limit content. Refuse to cram too much content into the course - need equal time for study and application. Must five food assessments and provide food feedback. Are an accredited graduate degree program. It requires a masters thesis - some solutions have been implemented into the Army immediately.

Requirements

Students have to learn to communicate effectively and how to learn. Are required to complete a community service project, blog, etc.

Resiliency

All Army schools and organizations are addressing the problems of multiple deployments, etc. Working to teach fitness in all areas.

Edfectiveness

All famous military leaders are CGSC graduates - also thousands of international leaders. The president of India traveled to Leavenworth to emotionally talk about the importance of his Leavenworth experience.

Army JROTC is needed more than ever before in today's Middle and High Schools. Diversity has grown exponentially in these schools; leadership brings confidence, which knits together multiple cultures. I am trying to assist start up of the Army JROTC programs at Norcross High School and Fayette County High School in Georgia.
