Are you picking up what I'm putting down?

December 11, 2011

Learning a different language is helpful no matter your MOS. I understand this, but which do you think is "more useful" than others?

Currently, I have a firm grasp on English (ha ha), a good understanding of Spanish, and the basics of Russian. (I am at a conversational level with each language)
However, I have been instructed to choose yet another language...a 'modern' language.

So here are my top 3 options:
French, German, and Italian

My major is International Relations-European focus. My MOS is yet to be determined (I won't know until September) though I need to start this language within the month. I am not Airborne Qualified and a female; I doubt that I will be stationed in Italy.
I plan to ADSO for a certain job which is likely to put me in Germany (if the Army applies my ADSO). I am leaning toward this language, because I have an interest in it as well. But French, is such a dominate language all over the world that I feel it could be of better use to me.

The Olympic announcers say everything in English and French. Just about everything that is printed (including washer/dryers instructions and household cleaning products) are in English, Spanish, and FRENCH.

So this leads to my question. If you had to pick one of the above languages, which would you choose? Which do you feel would be more helpful for a future career-Army officer?

I really appreciate you reading this and hopefully responding to it. I am in quite a dilemma at the moment and any dialogue would prove handy!

Thank you,
Francesca Welsh
