Role Models

January 12, 2011 | Captain Hannah He

This past week, Major Richard Winters died. As I read the many tributes in newspapers and magazines and blogs, I am inspired by his brave actions and dedication to his troops. His style of leadership is truly one that all young officers should study and emulate. For many of us young lieutenants, we were introduced to Dick Winters through multiple showings of "Band of Brothers."  As I think back to the many, many times my friends and I randomly quoted lines from this series in various semi-serious situations in order to clarify a point, I thought about all the many military role models available in movies and tv shows.

This led to pondering the lack of good female role models available. While it's easy to rattle off a list to include Captain Winters (Band of Brothers), Colonel O'Neill (SG-1), and Captain Rabb (JAG), how many female officers are there in popular media? The first one I could think of was Brigadier General Diane Beckman in the tv series Chuck, who plays a minor but very strong character throughout the series. There's also LTC "Mac" McKenzie from JAG, and Sam Carter, USAF, in SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

Maybe I should add this to my New Year's resolutions, looking into how female officers are portrayed in movies and tv.
