University of Incarnate Word Educator Briefing

On 21 March 2011 the San Antonio Recruiting Battalion, AMEDD, and ROTC conducted and Educator Breakfast for local area Educators. The goal of briefing was to inform local area Educators about the numerous opportunities that the US Army has to assist students. The topics covered were ASVAB Career Exploration Program, March 2 Success Program, ROTC Scholarships, and AMEDD Officer Programs. During our event we partnered up with the University of Incarnate Word, who hosted the event and provided our Battalion with the necessary support to make the event a success. The event started with our Battalion Commander LTC Sarabia talking about the value of adaptive leadership, and an article from the Harvard Business Review that discussed how companies are looking for the types of leaders that the US Army develops. Following the Battalion Commander, the MEPS Education Services Specialist Mr. Kowald explained the value, purpose, and benefit of students participating in the ASVAB Career Exploration Program. He showed educators how to use the ASVAB to identify student’s academic strengths and weaknesses. Then he transitioned into how the results of the test can be used to guide students into career fields that maximize their natural abilities. The next presenter was the 5th Brigade Education Services Specialist Mrs. Cain. She explained on the March2Success (M2S) Program and how it can be used to assist students in raising ACT/SAT and ASVAB scores through the use of online tutorials. The M2S Program is a free online program that can be used by anyone wishing to improve their academic abilities in Math, English, Science, and a variety of other subjects.
The second part of our briefing was conducted by the 5th Brigade ROTC Command and featured the Professors of Military Science from all the local Colleges. During their portion of the briefing they discussed their area of operations, ROTC qualifications, and the basic enrollment process of and ROTC scholarship and Non-Scholarship student. They also brought ROTC students that explained to the Educators how the ROTC program has been a positive impact in their lives, and how ROTC has assisted them with the goal of obtaining a College degree.
The last part of our briefing was conducted by the 5th Brigade AMEDD Recruiting Battalion who discussed the many opportunities that they offer through the Healthcare Professional Scholarship Program, Loan Repayment Programs, Special Pay, and their numerous Commissioning Programs for the Active and Reserve Components. They also discussed the Specialized Training the Army offers Healthcare Professionals.
The briefing was well received by local area Educators who were impressed with the amount of opportunities that the Army offers students. Our presentation covered programs that can assist student’s complete high school and attend college, as well as programs that help students expand their academic talents. Our Battalion Commander then closed the event by discussing with educators how the US Army and Educators can partner together to achieve the goals of the San Antonio Mayor's 20/20 program that is aimed at improving the graduation rate and education system in the city of San Antonio. The feedback we all received was very positive and everyone who attended seemed to learn something new about Army Recruiting Programs.
