Arctic Bandmaster: Alaska Day

October 23, 2010

I wish each of you could have been on the delightful Baranof Island in the city of Sitka, Alaska last week for the Alaska Day celebration.  This week long event commemorated the peaceful transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States in Sitka on Oct 18, 1867 and was themed as “Celebrating Sacred Ground.” It is an important event for the country and Army Alaska, so your 9th Army Band was in attendance ready to serve.

During our brief 3 days in Sitka, we led the parade that had the 9,000 citizens of Alaska’s 4th largest city lined up to cheer; played a special costumed themed ball for the city and her residents; performed a jam-packed special concert for the town in Herrigan Centennial Hall; performed a ceremony reenacting the transfer on Castle Hill; performed a special memorial  at the Sitka National Cemetery, played at the Coast Guard Air Station's "Eagle’s Nest" for Sailors and their families, and held a special show at Mt. Edgecombe High School. I even had a chance to give a special talk to the music students at Edgecombe.

The message that struck me was " tradition" and how a small community can have such a storied and proud past.

Here is a link to a quick photo display that gives you a snapshot of what occurred.

    Mr. Price,

We were very glad to have you in town, especially at MEHS! The kids are still talking about the performance, and your musicians made quite an impression.

While you were here, we spoke about Alaska's All State performances in November. The person you should speak with about appearing there (or at Solo & Ensemble in the spring) is Cam Bohman. Her email address is cambohman at msn dot com. I also forgot to mention to you that you aren't the only WVU graduate leading a band up here - Metlakatla's new music teacher, Chelsea Cook, was WVU's drum major last year.

I hope this information helps, and I look forward to seeing you around the state!

I am a coordinator for the 4th Ave Market Place. Downtown. We have a First Friday Art Walk every month. At this time we are opening up to having music on one of the 1st friday's there are only 12 months. We are hoping make this a community event and a place to play for great exposure and combine this with the military spouse and community. Would there be an interest in your part for participating. I would like to invite all local military artist to have a venue to show their art work. Would you know how I would go about making contact?

I thank you for your time. And hope to hear from you.

    Linda Warford.

Please join us for the First Friday event Nov 5th 5-730
