A Saturday Well Spent
February 23, 2008
Hooray for warmer weather, and by warmer weather I mean 15 degrees out at 0630 in the morning!
One of the perks of being a soldier in the Army Reserves is that volunteer opportunities often present themselves. Today I spent my Saturday on RST status helping out at an event called The Polar Plunge. Sounds odd? Literally, it’s teams of people plunging into freezing cold lake water.
These teams raised money for Special Olympics Nebraska (a great organization, look into if you are looking for volunteer opportunities). The Army was asked to provide equipment and man power to help run the event.
What a great way to spend a Saturday! What else was I going to do, sleep? Watch reruns of American’s Next Top Model? It was an early morning and very chilly at that!
Three other soldiers and I set up frame tents and enjoyed the rather balmy weather for a Nebraska February. Besides getting to watch men in floral Speedos dive into a lake, the best part was knowing that what I’m doing is helping out my community.
How awesome is that?! A Saturday well spent in my opinion.
