Soldier Blog Post

Kayley's Introduction

January 10, 2008

Blogs are presumed to written by emotional teenagers who need to “express themselves” or disgruntled employees needing an avenue to vent. Typical.

But I’m not a teenager with raging hormones nor am ticked off at my boss; I’m here to tell my story, express my point of view, and share what it’s really like to be a soldier in the US Army Reserves.

My name is Kayley. I’m a full time student studying International Business and Spanish at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I also am enlisted in the Reserves component of the US Army. Crazy, huh? Maybe.

I’m a senior, planning out my last couple of semesters, squeezing in the necessary classes to graduate. When not in class in the mornings, I work as an intern at an engineering firm (the business side!) sometimes 30+ hours a week.  Every night after getting off work, I escape to the gym on campus where I am training to run a marathon and score a 300 on my next APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test).

I get home around 8 at night only to study until midnight if not later. This doesn’t include the time I take to teach a freshman business recitation class, participate on the College of Business Administration Student Advisory Board, and be a volunteer note-taker for students with disabilities. So when am I soldier?

The Reserves allows me to do what I excel at. I wanted to finish my undergraduate degree and be involved on campus while working. Once a month, for one weekend, I put on my ACU uniform and drive to my unit for battle assembly (aka drill). One weekend a month and two weeks in the summer, that’s not a bad deal!

It is so great to have a female on here writing since I know we're such a small group anyway - it's nice to have a female perspective! So thank you for stepping up and keeping a blog on your experiences in the Army. I am going to be joining Army JAG sometime (I was just accepted a couple weeks ago and don't know when I actually head out) but I am no where near getting 300 on the APFT. I have always enjoyed working out and began training specifically for the APFT back in maybe June/July 2011, but I'm still nowhere near where I want to be. Can you give me an idea of the workout you used to get to 299 (I saw that in a later post)? Thanks so much for any help or direction you can give me!

First of all, congratulations on being accepted into the JAG Corps! That's such an accomplishment!

In regards to your question, I'll write a post about it! I've received a few emails asking me about what my work out routine is lately. Thanks for the inspiration to write and I hope it helps some.
