Dental Educator's Tour - Day 1
April 14, 2010
Army recruiting arranged a tour for dental educator's from across the country. We had 22 AEGD, GPR, OMFS, and administrators come for the tour. The tour was in San Antonio with the purpose being to highlight life as a Soldier, life as a dental officer, and what we do to take care of our Soldiers.
The tour kicked off Monday with an ice-breaker at the hotel.

Today we arranged for some of our senior leadership to meet us at the AMEDD Center and School to speak with them about the Dental Corps and graduate dental education.

It continued with a tour of the school and a stop at the prophy tech training course.

The tour continued with a visit to the Center for the Intrepid. This facility was so incredible, being able to see some of the injured Heroes recouperating, and the amount of money and effort that is invested in healing is incredible. I was amazed to see the type of equipment and facilities - wave simulators, firing range simulator, computer assisted rehabilitation environment (Caren), Gait lab, prosthesis lab, and exercise equipment.

None of the cardio or climbing equipment was modified for disabled people. The purpose was for them to learn how to use regular equipment (weights, treadmills, etc...) similar to what will be available to them when they are on their own. Amputees use rock climbing as part of their rehabilitation in addition to swimming, surfing and wake boarding.

Our tour guide was a physical therapist and was showing us an adaptive attachment used by an amputee for swimming.
Facilities are also available for family members staying near by to enjoy an "at home" environment at the warrior famly support center near by. Families and wounded Soldiers stay in lodging close by, but have the use of this beautiful facility to cook, watch videos, play games, or learn activies.

kitchen facilites available to cook in.

Beautiful tile mosaic outside the facility.
The tour continued with a visit to the Oral Surgey clinic at the hospital at Ft. Sam. There we had speakers tell us about the oral surgery residency program at the hospital, and also about some of the research that is being done there.

The tour finished for the day with a visit to one of the dental clinics at Ft. Sam Houston and finally with a picture in front of the hellicpoter in front of the school house with everyone.
