Dental Educator's Tour - Day 2

April 19, 2010

The 2nd day of the Dental Educator's tour started out with a trip out to Camp Bullis.  I had spent 2 weeks at Camp Bullis in 1999, and 1 day in 2004 - so I was interested to see how much had changed.

From Camp Bullis you can see the Dominion, an area of housing for sports stars, and celebrities around San Antonio (Houses set on the hill in the background).

We drove out to the site of a tent hospital.  A tent hospital is used initially when a hospital unit arrives, before more permanent facilities can be built up.

Inside the hospital it has full capabilities including: operating room, pharmacy, lab, intensive care, recovery, dental, optometry, sterilization, etc...

Following the tour of the tent hospital we went and saw the C4 course (Combat Casualty Care Course).  This is a training facility used by medical officers (all services) to train in advanced trauma life support given different scenarios.  The dummies used range in price from $70,000-$150,000.  The staff is able to change out the "injuries", and even control what the dummies say from their control center.  The staff can also control sounds, smells, and visibility from their vantage point.

We then proceeded to the town where they simulate clearing buildings.  The staff are also able to control all aspects while units go through including sounds, smells, etc...

The tour concluded with an awards dinner that night at the hotel.  The attendees were presented with a certificate and letter presented by COL Scott, and a coin presented by the recruiting Brigade Commander COL Montagno.

The photo's and story were very intresting.

I am glad to see we (Army) have a training facility of this caliber. I hope they add elements of the smell of cordite, ringing of the ears, moaning and crying from the wounded and nervousness of the soldiers around you for more realism. Of course, nothing beats live tissue training. Until we adopt live tissue training across the units, I reckon this lab is a decent alternative.

    Thanks again for the post.
