Department of Defense assists at Centennial Boy Scout Jamboree

August 9, 2010

The 100th Centennial Boy Scout Jamboree at Ft. A.P. Hill, Va was held July 26-4 Aug. The Department of Defense (DOD) was tasked with helping to support the Jamboree.  Not only was it held on a military installation, but the federal services also assisted in many other ways including running close to 1/3 of the merit badges offered.  Army, Navy, Air Force, Public Health, FEMA, and other agencies were there to assist.  It is estimated that close to 40,000 boys, and 20,000 volunteers and support staff participated in the jamboree.

The jamboree brought in scouts from other countries as well.  I was at a church service where scouts from Scotland participated, also in our booth I met scouts from Saudi Arabia.

All the federal services that participated were put up in barracks located on post, and meals were provided.

The dentistry merit badge was one of the top 7 merit badges at the Jamboree.  By the end of the jamboree we had close to 1000 scouts that had completed the dentistry merit badge.

In addition to myself, we had CPT Adams, SPC Hue, SPC Morris, and SPC Armour that ran the booth.  The constant flow of scouts kept us very busy.

It was also fun to meet a couple of special scouts.  I had 2 scouts come up to me one day and ask me if I knew their uncle LTG Freakley (has the video on the homepage of this website).  I also had a scout come up to me and ask me if I knew his granfather Major General Bill Lefler one of our previous Generals in the Dental Corps.

In the end it was a pretty amazing experience to be able to help the Boy Scouts in this way.
