Iraqi Wildlife

January 23, 2011 | Lieutenant Colonel Kendall Mower

In almost 3 months in Iraq I've seen a little bit of wildlife.  I haven't seen any camels but here are some shots of what I have seen on the base.

Rueppell's fox is the biggest animal we have here.  We see them pretty frequently - usually at night, sometimes morning, and occasionally during the day. You can see them running through the fields and even through our housing areas.

I've only seen one sun spider (at night)

The lizards like to hang out by the lights at night at eat bugs

Even though I haven't seen them - there are snakes (see the trail)

Even seen 2-3 different types of butterflies which surprised me since there is very little vegetation.

So I guess I can count on 2 hands the total amount of different types of wildlife I have seen - pretty sparse.  I'm sure there is much more to be seen off the base - but that's all I see here.

God Bless you with sharing the beautiful wildlife there. In disaster there is beauty still if you look for it. I admire you for taking the time to show the world what else is in Iraq.

Awesome animal shots! I'd only seen the foxes and camel spiders when I was out there; the foxes are actually pretty friendly from what I remember. Glad to know you're seeing something other than teeth and sand.
