Just returned from C4

May 7, 2010

I just returned from 8 days at Camp Bullis outside of San Antonio.  Camp Bullis is the training location for Ft. Sam Houston to do their field training (camping, shooting, outside of classroom training, etc...) at.

The combat casualty care course or C4 is a joint training environment.  It is designed to train healthcare providers about care in a combat environment.  It goes over medical issues like triage, how to set up the different medical facilities, but also goes into other military concepts like using gas masks, convoy training, and evacuating patients.

We had dentists, doctors, and nurses attend this course.  Other health care professionals can attend also, we just didn't have any this time.  It was interesting to see the make up of the group.  We had 2 foreign doctors from Germany, 1/3 of the class were doctors, the other 1/3 nurses, and the other 1/3 dentists (or close enough to it).  The majority of the attendees were either Navy or Army, but there were enough Air Force present to be represented :)

The first part of the training involved medical emergency training.  As a dentist I had the option of what to take.  I took advanced trauma life support (ATLS) which was excellent.  All the Army dentists took ATLS, while almost all of the Navy dentists took Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)  Since I was out of the clinic for 2 weeks, I will post some of the pictures over a couple of days to show what we did.

This is a picture of our living quarters.   12 beds, air conditioning - just like being on vacation :)

All the Army dentists got together frequently.  We had dentists from the Army 2 yr AEGD programs at Ft. Bragg and Hawaii along with myself.

CPT Le, myself, CPT Smith, MAJ Chan, CPT Hardy, CPT Danko, CPT Boquet, CPT Dubyk, and CPT Do.
