camel hill
March 13, 2011
i was on an observation post (op) on a hill one side was facing a village, the other a kuchi camp ( kuchi are the nomadic people of AFG). we're all sittin there observing doin what we do and we see this camel sitting in the middle of the desert. us being bored we go check out the camel. i was pumped by now this was the first camel i'd seen up close, ive been wanting to try to ride one my whole deployment . my excitement turned to disgust when we got up to him and he had poop and vomit running down his legs and was sitting in his own poo-vomit cocktail. the owner of the camel showed up asking us if we had medicine we can give the camel, we told him we only have people medicine but if id make him feel better we'd give him some advil. we returned to our op and watched the owner try to get the camel to move with no avail, the owner left joe camel with defeat in his eyes knowing he chose his laying ground to die.
later in the day an old kuchi woman walked towards the camel with a large stick, she was studying the camel walking around him and tried to push him with her stick. by now we made bets on if she'd hit him with the stick or not. there was some questionable stick pokes here n there, then outa nowhere she takes a step back and hits him with a running start ( would make peta cry). she proceeds to beat this camel senseless with her stick until she gives up and returns home. our interpreter told us wolves would come at night and eat him while he was still alive, we had sitreps going all night on if camel had been eaten by wolves or not. we left the next morning to see our little friend had died during the night.
i still have hopes of riding a camel over here, as long as he's not covered in poop
