the night rider

March 7, 2011

i recall many months ago my plt was driving back to the FOB late at night on the MSR. to help illustrate its third world dark at night and the roads are hoirribly paved with heavy ruts and large speed bumps. the gunner in the last vehicle calls up "whoa sh!t theres a crazy guy on a bike swerving through the convoy!" i see this afghani motorcyle god in my mirror, turban and man jamis flapping in the wind ( and wearing sandals) on a beater kawasaki goin a good 85-90 weaving between our vehicles and incoming traffic. (totally reminded me of a b-rated action flick it was awesome) when it came time for him to pass my vehicle i had to push over to miss a jingle truck sticking out into the road, me doing soo didnt even phase him while he overtook me on the dirt shoullder going 85 then popping back to dodge a tractor. we never did see the night rider again after that, hes probably dead on the side of the road by now driving like that. but we all hope to see him late at night gettin it on his beater kawasaki.

I thoroughly enjoyed your description of the night rider. I can see him in not just a B-movie, but in a future Indiana Jones flick! I'm new to the lingo of life in Afghanistan, so I wonder what is a jingle truck - like a Good Humor ice cream vendor? Did you have any concern that the motercyclist might be a suicide bomber, getting into the middle of your convoy as he did?

Keep the posts coming. And be safe.

glad you enjoyed the story, ive been here for over six months now and just started this whole blogging thing soo many more stories to catch up on.

to answer couple of your Q's a jingle truck is any large truck used for cargo and supplies and whatnot that they "jingle". its pimp my ride middle east customs where they hang bells and chimes all over the whip soo when they drive they jingle. plus their painted with crazy murals of scenery and animals etc.

and yes we did have concerns about it being a sbombr but we have to follow the rules of the road and allow civilian traffic to flow with our convoy (as much as we hate doing so)
