U.S. Army in Alaska

June 17, 2011

First time blogger here, please bare with me.  Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to discuss the U.S. Army in Alaska.  Having served for 11 years in the Army, I was in my mind extremely fortunate to serve 9 1/2 of those years in Alaska.  By no means did I seek or fight to stay in Alaska, but rather it was coincedence and unique sequence of events that allowed me to serve for this duration.  Although Alaska is not for everyone, it is a beautiful and unique geographical location that I encourage service members to try and serve.

I arrived in AK in 2001, and left in 2010.  Just as the Army has grown over the last ten years, so to has U.S. Army Alaska.  However, both Fort Richardson and Fort Wainwright are still relatively small posts, which foster tight-knit units.  I have found this to be crucial during the tough winter months and always having someone to turn to for the unique Alaska problem (help shoveling excess amounts of snow, freezing cold temps, hazardous road conditions).  Moreover, the MWR opportunities in Alaska are remarkable.  For just a small price, Soldiers have a chance to partake in world class outdoor activities from fishing, skiing, hunting, camping, hiking, to mountain climbing, sea kayaking and snow mobiling.  As the social norms have shifted for Soldiers to play video games and search the internet, I found one of the most gratifying weekly experiences by talking to Soldiers to find out their adventures for the weekend.  However, as a leader within the organization, no matter the adventure, I still inquired to ensure the Alaska weekend adventures were being conducted in a safe manner.

All in all, Alaska is a great opportunity for single Soldiers and families to experience a unique place.  The physical landscape is breath taking, and there is an activity for everyone.  If you have the opportunity to serve with the Army in Alaska, take it.  It will be worth every minute of your time.

My husband is currently in dental school through the Army and we look forward to at least 4 years of service post-graduation in 2013. We are very interested in Alaska, however I am concerned about the crime rate. Did you feel that Alaska was safe (areas around the Army bases) for women and children/ families stationed there?
