The 25th Black Engineer of the Year Awards GALA

February 20, 2011

These past couple of days in Washington , DC have been the best days ever for me.  The Black Engineer of the Year Awards Gala was an amazing , I was very honored to be apart of such a prestigious event. The famous and talented Boris Kodjoe was the Master of Ceremony for the wonderful event.  For those that don't know about BEYA it's like the Oscars for all the Engineers in the corporation world to be honored for their hard work and dedication to making a difference in the world.  Each and everyone of these honorees have not only made a difference in the corporations they work for but also in the their communities.  These individuals are Doctors, Scientist, Engineers, was well some Retired Military Personnel, and each one had their own story to tell about how they were able to overcome some adversities in their lives to become the top leaders in the professions today.  BEYA is all about promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to our young people giving them the opportunities to be about to attend colleges and universities to purse their passion and dreams.   I was honored to meet Retired GEN Leo Brooks,JR, along with his father and brother they are the first black family where all the men have reach the rank of General in the United States Army that is amazing.   Mr. Lloyd W. Howell, JR is the 2011 Black Engineer of the Year, he is the Executive Vice President of Booz Allen Hamilton.

I am a Baltimore City math/science teacher and was fortunate enough to take a group of students to the event Friday morning/afternoon. It was a great experience for these students. Most are interested in becoming scientists and engineers. Given their geographic area and, for many, their home life, this was their only exposure to a large group of professional and highly educated people. They asked questions of real engineers and scientists and were given the opportunity to see what these professions actually "do". The military personnel at the event were fantastic to the kids and patiently answered their questions. Great event, great experience!
