My "Symbol of Strength"

May 25, 2011

The latest advertising campaign for the Army demonstrates the many meanings of the uniform. For me, the uniform represents family in a very real way. I was engaged to my wife, Jennifer for six long years before we were married. Now, we didn't plan it that way I assure you. Jennifer was unable to work at that time due to complications of Lupus, which was far less understood and manageable than it is today. Because we were young and she could not work, it was up to me to provide healthcare if we were to be married. I was making ten dollars an hour and had NO benefits. When the Gulf war began I decided to enlist in the reserves and do my part for America. After a few years, it occurred to me I could transfer to active duty and secure the blessings of healthcare - and so I did!

I enlisted into the Regular Army, got married and shipped off to Fort Hood; benefits in hand! Without the Army, we would be in our 22nd year of being engaged about now I imagine. About six years ago, Jennifer went back to school and became a certified professional coder with hopes of working from home. Today, she works for a major, Detroit-based hospital - from home - and military moving doesn't disrupt her career.

Seven years ago we adopted our beautiful daughter from China and became a family of three. This too was possible ONLY as a result of a solid career (and military friendly financing .... props to USAA). Each of us in this family knows, without question - We are who are ONLY because of this uniform. And, we are grateful for it beyond words!

Until next time,

Terry

    Top,

Thank you for sharing your personal story with us. The courage you express through your words will no doubt inspire others to join.

The uniform you wear not only represents your strength, but the strength of your wonderful family that supports you.

The U.S. Army is not just composed of service members in the ranks, it embraces the family members who support those soldiers wearing the uniform – because as you understand and have written about - it is the strength of each “family unit” that empowers the U.S. Army.

Thank you and your family for all the contributions you have made to our great nation.

I look forward to reading your future blogs.

    Stay Army Strong,

    Jamie Carson
