PCS: Down to a Science

May 23, 2011

Well, the move is officially on! This morning I signed out and the movers will be here for the next three days before we drive West on Friday. I have been a Mustang, an Eagle and a Marauder. I enjoyed every second of it and wouldn't change a thing! I am grateful for the great leadership, past and present, I had while I was here. I was blessed with great Soldiers, Families and civilian staff members who taught me allot and I will never forget any of them!

I have exactly 22 hours to rearrange the house and "hide" the stuff I don't want packed. The task is more daunting than I remember it being in the past....UGH! For the next three days packers and movers will flood the house and drive my dogs crazy while they're at it!  Once Friday comes and we hit the road, our next task will be to beat the truck drivers to California and secure a new home before they arrive and our stuff goes to storage. Once it goes to storage we're stuck waiting on a delivery, so my "vacation" will be stalled with unpacking, rather than a couple of weeks in the sun (for a change).

Moving and setting up household is the first major task with any move, but not the only one. We will have to research schools as quickly as possible too, before settling a new home. Then comes finding new doctors, dentists and veterinarians that we trust with our healthcare for the next couple of years.

If all goes according to plan, 30 days from now we will be living a home that you would never guess we just moved in to. The last frame hung and life as normal is essential during a PCS move. The faster it's done, the easier the transition into a new position. Army life means dedication to duty, so there will be no time to settle in once work begins.

This is our ninth move during my service, so we have it down to a science at this point. Cooperation from every member of the family is essential in making a smooth transition.

Along the route to California we will squeeze in all the site seeing we can, so stay tuned for updates and pics! Until then, be sure and follow on twitter http://twitter.com/#!/tophynes ....

For you new recruits, please feel free to use this thread to ask questions about moving in the Army.

until next time,

Terry
