What to do with life after the Army?
February 20, 2012
What to do, what to do? In the next two - six years, my time in the Army will likely come to an end. Sadly, I have not spent the last twenty-two years deciding exactly what career path to follow after retirement. Sure, I've had plans and pursued those plans by attending college. The problem is that plans change - or at least mine seem to- and, when plans change, so does the college curriculum.
As a result, my degree plan has changed countless times in more than two decades. Now I fin myself attending school again, but this time I have no real idea what I want to do with the back-half of my life. I settled on completing a marketing degree. Not so much because I'm fascinated with the idea of marketing, but rather because the time has come for the degree to be in the books. Marketing was just the best fit, given my military education over the last thirteen years.
I have majored in Criminal Justice, English, and business. Once, I wanted to be a teacher. With age, maturity, and fewer patience - I know that I wish to do none of my previous desired lines of work upon retirement. Any ideas? I was a Military Policeman, but no longer enjoy police work. I have tolerated too many years in the walls of high schools to think that teaching is a relaxing way to enjoy my retirement. As for marketing - well, I don't know. I hardly see myself isolated in a cubical or spending another twenty years fixated on a computer screen. What jobs are you all doing in your retirement? Why? Heck, is anyone even hiring anymore? It seems there is a government hiring freeze at the moment? Ugh!
My advice to young Soldiers: Get your degree EARLY! There is no excuse not to take at least one class every term. Stick to the plan! If you change your mind, get another degree, but at least you'll have one under your belt. Don't wait until you're ready to retire to begin thinking about what's next. Set goals for yourself and get after them! Remember that the economy can change - and not always for the better - so, be versatile and prepared for any job market.
I'm certain it will come together, but I would like to hear your thoughts about a good place for retired veterans to gain meaningful employment.
until next time,
Terry
