Barnstorming the Midwest

April 10, 2010

The Concert Band and the Soldiers' Chorus from The U.S. Army Field Band are on the road again.  One of our other groups, America's Big Band - The Jazz Ambassadors, hit the road ahead of us and are currently in the upper Midwest.  The Band & Chorus convoy rolled out of our home at Fort Meade, Maryland for a first stop in Somerset, PA.

Here, SSG Brendan Curran takes aim while SGM Joan Mercer watches as they present a medley of songs from "Annie Get Your Gun."

Somerset High School students enjoy the concert while waiting for their opportunity to sit in with the Musical Ambassadors of the Army.

SSG Joel Ciaccio performing a virtuosic solo on the string bass.

One of the hits of the night was a a WWII veteran who fits into his uniform like it was just issued.

Next stop was Youngstown, Ohio.

A Color Guard from a nearby Air Force Air Wing opened the concert.

SSG Tracy Labrecque sings about true love.

SSG Jeanne Wiesman, an Ohio native, performs on the French Horn.

MSG Bob Cherry chats with a high school student sitting in on the French Horn.

MSG Victor Cenales and MSG Laura Lesche close the concert with a stirring rendition of Toby Keith's "American Soldier."

While we're on the road, Soldiers take advantage of every possible occasion to rehearse.  Here, MSG Laura Lesche, SSG Meghan Whittier, and SSG Pamela Terry do some hip pocket training backstage.

SSG Lauren Veronie, another Army Strong Stories Blogger, is caught in the act of shooting some photos.  In addition to her Army StrongStories blog, SSG Veronie chronicles her journey through MEPS, Basic Training, and life on the road with the Army Field Band at laurenveronie.blogspot.com/.

Several years ago, the Field Band recorded "A Letter from Mom," where MSG(P) Janet Hjelmgren narrated a letter written by Tami Ketterman to her son who has completed three combat tours.  Here, the Ketterman family present MSG(P) Hjelmgren a keepsake for giving life to a mother's words.  Later this year, "Letter from Mom" and many other musical selections will be available for free download at www.ArmyFieldBand.com.

MSG Bill Gabbard and SFC Mario Garcia sing "Homeward Bound" from a medley of Simon and Garfunkel tunes that has been a big hit with audiences.

After each concert we greet the audience and thank them for their support of America's Army.  Here's one of our younger fans.

Soon to come will be pictures from performances in Indiana as we head north.  You can also follow the band's travels at www.facebook.com/fieldband.
