Soldier Blog Post

To new beginnings

December 22, 2010

As a public affairs specialist in the Army, I am used to telling other people's stories while letting mine stay in the background. For this blog, I guess it will have to be the opposite. I don't know how great I will be at telling my story, but here goes.

A little bit about me

I am a specialist in the Army preparing for my first deployment to Afghanistan. Although the thought of going to war is a little intimidating, it is also just the tiniest bit exciting. Exciting? War? Naw. I know, it's a little weird, but there it is. I'm excited. Not jumping up and down yelling, yippee, excited, but a 'that's kind of cool' excited.

I joined the Army looking for adventure. I'd graduated college and couldn't bring myself to settle down into one job. With a little encouragment from my parents, who'd both been Marines, I joined. The thing about adventure, however, is its only really fun when you're telling people about it after the fact. While still in the midst of one, it's often uncomfortable, messy, and painful.

Being in Afghanistan is likely to stink and I'm probably going to hate it, but once I'm done it'll make for an excellent story. There is also the fact there will be some great photo opportunities.

So there it is, I'm just a simple girl who was looking for adventure. Here is my story... occasionally with photos.
