Life of a USAMU Soldier
August 26, 2010
I’m SSG Tyrel Cooper and I’m a shooter / Instructor for the United States Army Marksmanship Unit Service Rifle Team. This year I traveled to Quantico Virginia to compete in the Interservice Championships where I won one individual trophy and three Team trophies. While in Virginia, myself and 2 other team mates went to Washington DC and ran a 4 mile monument run. This was an awesome experience for me to see monuments of past soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice! From Virginia we traveled to Camp Perry Ohio to compete in the National Rifle Championships. This year was one of my better years, winning several individual and team awards. We take the knowledge and skill we have as shooters, and teach that to other Soldiers deploying. Through our Train the Trainer and Squad Designated Marksmanship programs that we teach 7 months out of the year, we are able to train thousands of Soldiers. Our primary mission is to support the US Army Accessions Command through a positive public relations campaign, support the war fighter by taking lessons learned in competition and translating them to the battle field, and conduct research and development for the Army in the areas of weapons, ammunition, and optics.
